What is Custom Metal Bending?
Custom Metal Bending happens when we change the metal’s form by applying force to the object. We can make this happen for pipes, bars, beams, and tubes. We specialize in making these products from four key materials. The materials are carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, coil steel, and galvanized materials. Our team will work with you to come up with ideas for your project, and make it come to life. This will help save you both time and money.
What Are the Different Types of Metal Bending?
Our team at JB Welding & Refrigeration uses three different metal bending processes in air bending, coining, and bottom bending. Any of the below processes allow for steel bending to occur. These allow us to keep your projects on time and under budget.
Air bending is the most common form of metal bending. The work material in this situation is only in contact with the edge of the die and the tip of the punch. We force the punch past the die into a V-opening. You can do a partial air bend or a full air bend depending on the degree of tooling you use. You should almost never use it on older, mechanical, or brake presses due to the margin of error.
Coining is one of the most basic types of bending. This happens when our team places the object between the punch and die. It goes through enough pressure that the punch tip cuts into the material, allowing flow to the die. Coining has strong accuracy and repeatability. It does not require sophisticated machines to execute. It does, though, need more weight than air bending. It can often between more than 50 tons per inch of material versus one or two for air bending.
Bottom bending combines air bending and coining. The die angle should match the intended angle of the material we work on. We first bottom bend against the die, then the radius of the punch. We force the material into the piece, which achieves the angle of the punch. Our technician releases the material, and the work piece will meet the die again. The material, unlike coining, is not under the same amount of tonnage. That means there must be spring back to consider.
